CHANGE

But change isn't some we in the arts are good at!

But change isn’t something we in the arts do well

No it’s not really something we like to think about as we think we do, and do it really well.

It seems incredible to me that the Arts sector is so reticent to adopt change.  When I say change I am talking about the adoption of business change not creative change as we are still the leading sector in that respect.  No, treating art like a business is a taboo, the very mention of the words business and art in the same breath grates in the mouth of most on the artistic side although we hold up as some form of Demi gods those who have achieved commercial success, one thinks of the likes of U2, Pierce Brosnan, Graham Knuttle, The Pogues, Jim Sheridan et al and yet when asked to reach those or similar heights themselves most will state that they feel as if they would be giving away their art, their creativity, their very soul.

“Art Cannot Exist In a Vacuum”

How can we change this? Well there does seem to be a small shift in recent years, a number of national and funding organisations have taken a lead role in the promotion of professional development initiatives offering workshops and mentoring in topics as diverse as taxation, marketing, contracts and fundraising but the problem I see here is that there is no overriding structure just diverse topics covered in a diverse manner.

What we need is a concentrated development programme that outlines the aims, goals and outcomes of the scheme without taking away the core values of the individual participant, not compromising their creativity or art but enhancing it, giving it greater impact.

What are Value Propositions? How can knowing mine help me?

The value proposition is central to the overall business model and should form the anchor for all decision-making, operations, and customer engagement. It is more than a set of words; more than a set of marketing messages; it is the framework for how the business aligns its activities and output with its target audience’s needs, to deliver a compelling experience that can ultimately be monetized through an exchange of value.
